  • annual prizes to the best books and articles in the field of British studies published during the preceding year,
  • two fellowships for dissertation research,
  • and sponsors two undergraduate essay contests in British Studies.

Winners of the 2007 NACBS prizes for scholarship and dissertation fellowships have been announced (and see below for awardees for previous years).

NACBS Prizes for Scholarship:

  • John Ben Snow Prize for the best book in any field of British studies dealing with the period from the Middle Ages through the eighteenth century.
  • Albion Book Prize for the best book on any aspect of British studies since 1800.
  • Walter D. Love Prize for the best scholarly article in any field of British Studies.
Each prize is awarded to an author of a work published in the preceding calendar year that in the judgment of the respective prize committees, best represents scholarship in all fields of British studies. The authors of these books and articles must be residents of the United States or Canada, but their works can appear either in North America or abroad. Nomination for any of these prizes may be made by authors, publishers, editors, friends, teachers, or colleagues. These competitions normally have their deadlines for nominations set as April 1st in the year following publication of the respective books and articles, and the prizes are announced at the Awards Ceremony held at the annual meeting in the autumn.
The John Ben Snow Prize is made possible by an endowment from the John Ben Snow Memorial Trust, and was first awarded in 1983.  The Albion Book Prize, formerly the NACBS Book Prize formerly British Council Book Prize, is supported by the NACBS. Both book prizes are currently in the amount of $500. The Walter D. Love Prize, first awarded in 1981, is given for the best scholarly article in any field or period of British studies; currently this prize is in the amount of $150.

NACBS Dissertation Fellowships:

Candidates for both awards must be citizens of the United States or Canada and must have completed all the requirements for the Ph.D. degree except for the dissertation itself.
Since 1988, the NACBS Dissertation Year Fellowship, funded by an endowment raised by members, the regional conferences, foundations, and corporations, and co-sponsored by the British Council, is awarded to support dissertation research in the libraries and archives of the United Kingdom by a graduate student enrolled in a North American university. Currently the amount of the Fellowship is $5,000. The NACBS Dissertation-Year Fellowship competition normally takes place on the same schedule as the book and article prize competitions, with the deadline for nominations set as April 1st, but with the winner notified by June 1st in order that the winner may use the funds as soon as possible.
In 1989, the NACBS and the Huntington Library in San Marino, California, began the NACBS-Huntington Library Fellowship for a graduate student to do research in the collections of the Huntington Library. The amount of the fellowship is currently $2,000. The NACBS-Huntington Library Fellowship competition coincides with the Huntington Library's own award competitions. The deadline for applications is normally in November, with the award announced in the early Spring to be taken up any time in the twelve months beginning the following July 1st.

NACBS Essay Contests in British Studies for Undergraduates:

Announcements

The NACBS has also compiled a list of outside funding opportunities for study and research ranging from graduate study to residential fellowships.  Although the list is not comprehensive, it is offered as a service to the NACBS membership in response to the recommendations of the NACBS Report on the State and Future of British Studies.

Announcements of these annual competitions, giving the names of the committee members and describing the competition procedures, are made on this page, and posted on H-Albion, the H-NET List for British and Irish History.

  • Note too that the PCCBS has begun its own PCCBS Book Prize open to authors who are also members of the PCCBS.
The winners of the prize and fellowship competitions are announced at the NACBS annual conference.  Previous winners of recent competitions are available below:
