NACBS 2010 HOTEL AND TRAVEL INFORMATION

HOTEL INFORMATION

The annual meeting of the NACBS will be held at Baltimore’s Tremonts: Historic Venue and All Suite Hotel http://www.tremontsuitehotels.com/

The conference will be held in the Tremont Grand, a historic structure originally built in 1866 as the Grand Lodge of the Maryland Masonic Lodge.

The hotel rooms are located in the Tremont Plaza. This is a separate building, connected to the Tremont Grand by a corridor. When arriving by car or taxi, use the Tremont Plaza entrance on St. Paul St. to check in.

Amenities
All hotel rooms are suites which feature a sitting area, a kitchenette, and free high-speed internet. Hotel amenities include a 24-hour fitness center, a deli/store, Tug’s Bar and Grille restaurant, and a café.
The Tremont Grand is located across the street from a grocery store and the Tremonts are located in the Mt. Vernon/Charles St. corridor, home to many of Baltimore’s best restaurants. The Baltimore Harbor is just a 10-minute walk away.

Conference Rate
A book of rooms has been reserved for the nights of Thurs-Sat. 11/11-11/13/2010. A few rooms are available on Wed. 11/10 as well.
Hotel rooms are available at the NACBS conference rate of $129 per night for single/double occupancy. The rate is $149 for triple and $169 for quad occupancy. Room rates are subject to applicable state and local taxes, currently 13.5%.
To negotiate this room rate, the NACBS needs to fill a specified amount of rooms, so we urge you to stay at the conference hotel.

Reservations
The conference rate is only guaranteed until OCTOBER 13, 2010.
To make a reservation go to: www.tremonts.com. Click on the “Reservations” button on the left-hand menu. In the box, click on “Group Reservations”. In the new box enter the password: NACBSNOV10, and make your reservation. All reservations must be guaranteed by a major credit card, or first night’s room and tax deposit. You have up to 24 hours prior to the arrival date to cancel your room reservation.

TRAVEL INFORMATION

By Air
Baltimore is served by three major airports: Baltimore/Washington International/Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI) in Maryland, and Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD) and Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA) in Northern Virginia.

Just 15 minutes from downtown Baltimore, BWI is the closest airport [http://www.bwiairport.com]. It is served by 55 carriers, including Southwest, AirTran, American, Continental, Delta, Northwest, US Airways, and United.
Daily nonstop international service to BWI from destinations including London, U.K. (from Heathrow via British Airways), and Toronto, Canada is available.

By Rail
Baltimore is easily accessible by train. Two stations serve the Baltimore area: the BWI Airport Station and Penn Station. Amtrak serves both these stations with trains running 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Penn Station Baltimore is the closest station to the hotel. By Car
Directions To The Tremont Plaza Hotel

From BWI Airport: Exit onto I-95 and continue to Exit 4 Baltimore. Follow the I-395 Exit heading downtown, and stay in the lane for the Inner Harbor. Bear right and turn onto Conway Street. At the second traffic light, turn left onto Charles Street. At the 7th traffic light, turn right onto Saratoga Street, and travel one block to St. Paul Place. Turn right. The Tremont Plaza is on the corner of Saratoga and St. Paul Place.

From the North or South on I-95: From Washington D.C. (south) or the Fort McHenry Tunnel (north), take the I-395 Exit, heading downtown, and follow directions above.

From the West on I-70: Take I-695 towards Glen Burnie. Follow I-95 north to Baltimore and follow the directions above from I-95.

The MWCBS also invites submissions for a special series of panels engaging the work of David Cressy, Humanities Distinguished Professor of History at Ohio State University and author of Dangerous Talk: Scandalous, Seditious, and Treasonable Speech in Pre-Modern England and Birth, Marriage, and Death: Ritual, Religion, and the Life Cycle in Tudor and Stuart England. Professor Cressy will serve as respondent for these sessions.

The MWCBS welcomes papers presented by advanced graduate students and will award The Walter L. Arnstein Prize at its plenary luncheon for the best graduate student paper given at the conference.

Proposals should include a 200-word abstract for each paper and a brief, 1-page c.v. for each participant, including chairs and commentators. For full panels, please include a brief 200 word preview of the panel as a whole. In addition, please place the panel proposal, and its accompanying paper proposals and vitas in one file. Please make certain that all contact information, particularly email addresses are correct and current. The 2010 NACBS Submissions Site is now operational and ready to accept proposals.  You can find the site by visiting www.nacbs.org/conference.html.  Alternatively, you can go directly to http://nacbsproposal.fiu.edu.  At this site, you will find detailed submissions instructions.  After reading the instructions, organizers will be able to submit singe papers, three-paper panels, and four-paper roundtables for consideration.  The Program Committee looks forward to considering all submissions.   If you have questions or if you wish to make a submission that deviates from these formats, please contact the Program Chair, Lara Kriegel, at nacbsprogram@gmail.com.

Call for Papers, Annual Meeting, Burlington, Vermont, September 24-25, 2010

The Northeast Conference on British Studies (NECBS) will hold its annual meeting in 2010 in Burlington, Vermont, on Friday and Saturday September 24 and 25. The 2010 conference will be hosted by the University of Vermont, with Paul Deslandes in charge of the local arrangements.

We solicit the participation of scholars in all areas of British Studies, broadly defined. In particular, we welcome proposals for interdisciplinary panels that draw on the work of historians, literary critics, and scholars in other disciplines whose focus is on Britain and its empire, from the Middle Ages to the present. Proposals for entire panels on a common theme will be given priority, although individual paper proposals will also be considered if several of them can be assembled to create a viable panel. Proposals for roundtable discussions of a topical work, or current issue in the field, or pedagogical practices with respect to the teaching of particular aspects of British Studies are also encouraged. The typical ninety-minute panel will include three papers, each lasting fifteen-twenty minutes, a chair, and a commentator. Roundtables may have a looser format.

Proposals should include a general description of the panel or roundtable (including an overall title), a 200-300 word abstract for each paper to be read and a one-page curriculum vitae for each participant. The address, phone number, and e-mail address of EVERY participant (including the chair and commentator) must be included in the proposal. For panel or roundtable proposals the name of the main contact person should be noted clearly. Electronic submissions (as e-mail attachments in Word) are preferred, with all the various materials presented in a single document.

All submissions must be received by March 15, 2010 (final decisions will be announced in June 2010).

The Southern Conference on British Studies solicits proposals for its 2010 meeting to be held 5–7 November 2010 in Charlotte, North Carolina. The SCBS will meet in conjunction with the Southern Historical Association.

The SCBS construes British Studies widely and invites participation by scholars in all areas of British history and culture, including the Empire or Commonwealth and the British Isles. Interdisciplinary approaches and proposals which focus broadly on teaching British studies are especially welcome.

Proposals may consist of individual papers or of papers grouped for a session. For session proposals, two, or, preferably, three papers should relate to a common theme, not necessarily bound by the usual chronological framework.

For each paper proposed, please submit an abstract of 200 to 300 words, indicating the thesis of the paper, the sources and methodology employed in research, and how it enhances or expands knowledge of its subject. Papers should have a reading time of 20–25 minutes. Also, please submit a curriculum vitae for each participant.

The Western Conference on British Studies announces that it will hold its 2010 Meeting in Austin, TX on September 24-25, 2010, at the Marriott Courtyard and Residence Inn. Professor Brian Levack, of the University of Texas at Austin, will be serving as plenary speaker for what promises to be an exciting and convivial conference.

The WCBS welcomes proposals from faculty and graduate students, for individual papers and complete sessions on all aspects of British Studies and the British experience, including: History, Philosophy, Politics and Government, Literature, Arts, and Culture. In addition, the WCBS seeks proposals addressing Comparative History, the British Empire, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Historiography, the teaching of British History/Studies and the conditions of British Studies in North American colleges and universities.

Papers and Presenters: For each proposed paper please provide a brief abstract (200 words), and for each participant please provide a brief CV (1-2 pages). Complete sessions should have three papers, a chair and a commentator. A c.v. should also be provided for the chair and commentator.

Complete Sessions: For complete session proposals, please identify the individual who will serve as the contact between the program chair and the session participants. Further, please provide a full address, including e-mail, for the contact persons.

Chairs and Commentators: If you are interested in serving as a session chair or commentator, please submit a notice, a brief c.v., and an indication of areas/topics in which you would interested in providing a comment.

NORTH AMERICAN CONFERENCE ON BRITISH STUDIES

ANNUAL MEETING

NOVEMBER 12-14, 2010

The NACBS and its Mid-Atlantic affiliate, the MACBS, seek participation by scholars in all areas of British Studies for the 2010 meeting.  We solicit proposals for panels on Britain, the British Empire, and the British world.  Our interests range from the medieval to the modern.  Though primarily a conference of historians, we welcome participation by scholars across the humanities and social sciences, especially on interdisciplinary panels.

We invite panel proposals addressing selected themes, methodology, and pedagogy, as well as roundtable discussions of topical and thematic interest, including conversations among authors of recent books.  North American scholars, international scholars, and graduate students are all encouraged to submit proposals to the NACBS Program Committee.

Strong preference will be given to complete panel or roundtable proposals that consider a common theme.  Panels typically include three papers and a comment; roundtables customarily have four presentations.  Individual paper proposals will also be considered in rare cases.  Those with single paper submissions are strongly encouraged to search for additional panelists on lists such as H-Albion or at venues such as the NACBS Facebook page.  Applicants may also write to the Program Chair for suggestions (nacbsprogram@gmail.com).

Committed to ensuring the broadest possible participation of scholars in British Studies, the Program Committee will give priority to those who did not read papers at the 2009 meeting.   Panels that include both graduate students and established scholars are especially encouraged, as are submissions with broad chronological focus and interdisciplinary breadth.  In order to encourage intellectual interchange, we ask applicants to compose panels that feature participation from a range of institutions.  Single-institution panels are not encouraged; similarly, graduate supervisors are discouraged from appearing on panels with their own students and very recent graduates.   No participant will be permitted to take part in more than one session except in exceptional circumstances cleared by the Program Committee, and no more than one proposal will be considered from each applicant.

Next July, the annual conference of the Institute of Historical Research is taking as its theme environmental history. Over two days we shall feature a series of lectures, panels, policy forums, exhibitions and book launches devoted to this exciting field. We have lined up some of the world's top experts as keynote speakers: William Beinart, Alfred Crosby, Harriet Ritvo and Donald Worster, and shall be ensuring that there is full press coverage. We anticipate over 300 registrations.

I am writing now to give you advance warning of the event, at which I hope very much you will wish to join us in some shape of form. We will be back in the South Block of Senate House, ie: using the Beveridge Hall and the surrounding reception area and galleries for the main events. Do let us know as soon as possible if you would like to be involved, and please pass on news of the conference to your colleagues and graduate students. Details of the cfp are below.

As always, we are grateful for your support, and may I thank those NABCS colleagues particularly for helping to make Cities in 2009 such a success. The Anglo-American conference has been running at the IHR since 1921 and is the main national history event of the academic calendar. This is a wonderful opportunity for us and for you to communicate to the wider history community some of the findings and concerns of the environmental sector past, present and future.

NACBS Accommodations

Due to the high demand for NACBS Rooms at the Hyatt Regency Louisville, we may run out of accommodation there at the Conference rate.   We advise those who are unable to secure rooms at the Hyatt to book at the adjacent Marriott Louisville Downtown, which is the headquarters hotel for the concurrent Southern Historical Association Meeting.  At present, rooms are available there for $115 per night.  To book at the Marriott, please call (800) 533-0127 or access the online portal at http://www.uga.edu/sha/meeting/index.htm.  When booking, please ask for the Southern Historical Association rate.  We advise you to book by our deadline of October 14.  In the event that rooms become unavailable at the Marriott, please contact the conference organizers, who will make what efforts we can to secure more rooms at this late date.

Altogether, more than 80 speakers will be presenting papers on a wide
range of themes, covering the development of cities across the world
from the ancient world to the present day.

The conference includes a publishers' fair, exhibition, and a
reception, to be hosted at London's historic Guildhall by the City of
London Corporation.
