About the event

Join the NACBS to celebrate the publication of Radhika Natarajan's new co-authored history for children: Hear Our Voices: A Powerful Retelling of the British Empire in 20 Stories. This event will take place online.

Hear Our Voices is a compelling and important history of the British Empire, told from the perspective of 20 historical figures. This book introduces young readers to individuals, both powerful and modest, who lived through, challenged, and influenced the course of the British Empire.

In conversation with historian Christienna Fryar, Natarajan will describe the process of adapting her scholarship on Modern Imperial Britain for a young audience. Her collaboration with her publisher, editor and illustrator revealed the gulf between academic histories and public awareness of the past. In the wake of a resurgent banned books movement in the US, and a continued refusal to acknowledge empire in Britain, Fryar and Natarajan will discuss the significance of providing a general readership with engaging and informative historical narratives about the British Empire and its ongoing impact on the present.
