Panel on late colonialism, race, environment

Very belatedly, I’m interested in coordinating a panel around colonialism, environment (and/or conservation), and race. I’m hoping to share something on race and gender as they shaped conservation work and environmental writing in late-colonial Northern Rhodesia (Zambia). But anything that shared a colonial environmental angle, dealt with late colonialism more generally, or is concerned with race in modern colonial contexts could fit nicely.

Panel on empire and colonization

Dear all,

Another graduate student and I are looking for a third member for a panel on early modern empire, colonization, and the environment. We are both working on the relationships between environment, infrastructure, and the state in the early modern Caribbean, but we'd love to talk with folks on any related topics, including similar processes in a European context!

You can reach out to zgostisha@uchicago.edu.

Hi, I am an early modern specialist and I am working on a project that explores rivers and riparian conflict in 16th-18th century England. I am especially interested in how the crown worked to manage England's rivers, and broker settlements to disputes about how rivers should be exploited and maintained. I can't speak to the Caribbean, but "relationships between environment, infrastructure, and the state" is right up my alley. Could you use a European-centered paper?

Idea for a panel on British businesses in imperial markets

Hello. A late post to see if anyone has interest in forming a panel around British businesses operating in colonial/post-colonial markets. My own paper would have a health theme with a focus on C20th India. Also interested in ambiguity, failure, compromise in that context. If any of this connects on any level, email me at Richard.Hornsey@nottingham.ac.uk.

Hi Richard, I have two papers interested in discussing colonial markets and material culture. Would this fit with your ideas in anyway?

Panel on natural science and/or professionalization

I'm working on a science journal from the 2d half of the 19th c and looking to create a panel that might focus on natural sciences in that period, or gendered language and science, or professionalization/amateur participation. Please get in touch at rodrickab@wofford.edu

Thanks! Anne Rodrick
