George Cecil Ives, an upper-class Cambridge graduate, founded Britain’s first queer rights organization around 1893. He named it the Order of Chaeronea to commemorate the battle in 338 BCE where the Macedonians slaughtered an army of same-sex lovers, the Sacred Band of Thebes. To evade prosecution, the Order was protected by strict codes of secrecy and silence; but Ives drew up a rule book, which survives among his papers at the Harry Ransom Center at the University of Texas
